Categories and groups

Categories say what a transaction was for. Groups add categories up, like everything for the house. Find both in Settings → Categories.

A group (Housing, Transport, Groceries…) holds categories and adds up everything inside them. In Insights you can switch between spending by group and by category.

Each group counts as:

  • Spending: money going out. It counts towards your spending and budget.
  • Savings: money you put aside. It’s left out of your spending.
  • Income: money coming in, like your salary.

A group also has a colour (every category in it uses that colour) and a budget type that new categories in it start with. Tap a group to fold it, or its pencil to edit it. A group can only be deleted once it’s empty.

Choose New category (or the + add menu → Category) and set:

  • Name, Icon and the Group it belongs to.
  • Budget type: Needs, Wants or Savings. This decides which part of your budget strategy it counts towards.
  • Rules: which transactions go here automatically. See Rules and merchants.

Each category shows how many rules it has and what it spent this month.

Reset to defaults deletes all your own categories and rules and brings back the standard set. Your transactions are kept, but lose their category until the default rules file them again.
